Bertjan Verbeek is Professor of International Relations and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Radboud University Nijmegen. He investigates the puzzle of why decision-makers in foreign policy crises sometimes knowingly engage in foreign policies that risk to be counterproductive to their foreign policy objectives. His research project addresses the changing context of world politics, in particular the increased importance of global norms, international organizations, NGOs, as well as domestic politics (especially populism) in defining the conditions under which decision-makers (think that they have to) make foreign policy decisions. Empirically, the project focuses on decisions to engage the military as well as on decisons to protect the national currency.
